Copy of Ji Jiu Zhang, Complete Chapter in Zhangcao Script, Paper, 23.3x398.7, Palace Museum
Stretching nearly four meters long, this magnificent handscroll opens with a delicate ink landscape of bamboo and rocks before transitioning into a dense, rhythmic wall of ancient cursive script. This is Deng Wenyuan’s Yuan Dynasty copy of the 'Jijiu Zhang' (Emergency Chapters), which was originally a Han Dynasty textbook designed to teach rapid writing during chaotic times. The large characters 'Cao Sheng' (Sage of Cursive) on the far right highlight the prestige of this calligraphic style, while the numerous red seals show it has been cherished by collectors for centuries. It’s a fascinating glimpse into how ancient students learned to write fast!
