Horses, Goat and a Man
Dirck Stoop, a Dutch artist from the Baroque era, was practically obsessed with horses, a passion he developed while traveling through Portugal and Spain as a court painter. In this lively sketch, we get a backstage look at his process: three horses and a goat are chilling in a pasture while a man in a wide-brimmed hat keeps watch. The loose, energetic ink washes make the animals look like they're about to shake off the dust and walk right off the page. It's a fantastic example of a quick study, proving that sometimes the rough drafts are just as captivating as the finished masterpieces.
