Garden Court of a Palace
1636
Dirck van Delen invites us into a sun-drenched, imaginary palace courtyard where 17th-century Dutch elites stroll across a checkered marble floor. Notice the musicians playing trumpets on the upper balcony, adding a silent soundtrack to this architectural fantasy. Van Delen was a master of perspective, and here he brilliantly captures the grandeur of classical columns, statues in niches, and expansive cloudy skies typical of the Baroque era. The figures, dressed in their finest black and pink silks, seem almost like guests at a party that ended nearly 400 years ago.
