Iconoclasm in a Church
1630
Step into a 17th-century Dutch church during the chaotic 'Beeldenstorm' or Iconoclastic Fury! Dirck van Delen masterfully captures the moment when Protestant mobs stormed Catholic churches to smash 'idolatrous' statues and art. Notice the man on the ladder using a rope to yank down a statue from its high perch, while others below cheer or join the fray. It's a fascinating snapshot of religious turmoil, painted with incredible architectural precision that makes you feel like you're standing right there in the nave.
