Saint Jerome in the Wilderness by Domenico Piola, 1627[-]1703

Here we see Saint Jerome, the scholarly hermit, depicted with the dramatic intensity typical of the Baroque period. Domenico Piola uses stark white highlights against a darker wash to make the saint’s muscular, emaciated body pop out from the shadows of his cave, giving him an almost sculptural quality. Leaning on a skull—a grim reminder of mortality known as a *memento mori*—and surrounded by books, Jerome embodies the penitent scholar who famously translated the Bible. The raw energy in his pose and that piercing gaze really capture the spiritual struggle of life in the wilderness.
