Venus and Cupid in Vulcan’s Forge
1627[-]1703
Vulcan, the blacksmith god, is caught mid-swing with his massive hammer in this energetic Baroque drawing. His rippling muscles dominate the scene as he works at the anvil, while his wife Venus and winged son Cupid look on from the right, perhaps interrupting his labor to ask for favors. It’s a funny glimpse into a dysfunctional divine family—Venus was notorious for her affairs, yet here she visits his forge. Domenico Piola uses fluid lines and wash to create a sense of heat and movement, making the mythological figures feel incredibly alive.
