Exalted Gathering in the Green Woods
c. 1620
Dong Qichang, the Ming Dynasty's most influential art theorist, depicts a VIP gathering of scholars in a lush landscape. At the center, a bearded figure plays a guqin (zither) beside a massive, porous scholar's rock that dominates the composition like a natural sculpture. Surrounding him, elegantly robed figures chat and listen while servants attend to the scene, capturing the idealized life of the literati. Dong Qichang was famous for categorizing art history into 'Northern' and 'Southern' schools, and this piece reflects his deep admiration for the refined, scholarly style of the Southern tradition.
