Landscape Album in the Style of Ancient Masters 02 (Nelson)
Dong Qichang, a Ming Dynasty master who basically wrote the rulebook for Chinese painting, created this scene as a visual response to a poem by Du Fu. You can see his signature 'textured' brushstrokes building up the mountains, which look almost like geometric puzzles covered in blue and red dots. The calligraphy at the top explains he painted this while traveling, capturing the feeling of 'stone cliffs opening like brocade' and 'pines playing like instruments.' It's a perfect example of how he didn't just copy nature, but filtered it through poetry and ancient styles.
