Landscape Album in the Style of Ancient Masters 01 (Nelson)
Dong Qichang, the ultimate art critic and theorist of the Ming Dynasty, created this towering landscape as a sophisticated 'remix' of the past. Notice the swirling, rope-like texture of the mountains? That's his signature 'hemp-fiber stroke,' a technique he used to pay homage to the great Yuan dynasty master Huang Gongwang. Instead of just copying, Dong was engaging in a visual dialogue with history, creating a dreamy world of ochre and blue-green peaks where tiny pine trees cling to the cliffs. It looks like a wild fantasy, but it's actually a masterclass in scholarly painting style.
