Album of Landscapes in the Style of the Ancient Masters 04 (Nelson)
Dong Qichang was the ultimate 'art influencer' of the late Ming Dynasty, famous for copying old masters but making the style distinctly his own. In this album leaf, he pays homage to the Yuan dynasty painter Zhao Mengfu, recreating a serene 'Water Village' scene with soft, rolling mountains and misty rivers. The calligraphy at the top is essentially his signature move: he notes that his family owns the original masterpiece and he is creating this version as a tribute. It’s a perfect example of 'literati' painting, where the goal wasn't realistic detail, but capturing the scholarly, spiritual vibe of the landscape through elegant brushwork.
