Jingxi Calling Forth the Recluse - Colophon 3
This elegant calligraphy scroll features vertical columns of text written in a fluid 'running script' (xingshu), showcasing brushstrokes that range from deep, saturated ink to dry, expressive lines. The text is a scholarly inscription discussing a Ming Dynasty anecdote from the book 'Yehuo Bian' (Wild Gleanings) about a monk named Huixiu who abandoned his vows for secular life, leading to a strange tale of karmic retribution and the history of the 'Yunqi Tower.' Although the artwork title associates it with the Ming master Dong Qichang—a giant of art history who championed the 'Southern School'—the signature and red seal at the bottom reveal this specific note was actually added by the Qing Dynasty official Weng Tonghe in 1877, illustrating the cherished tradition of collectors adding their own thoughts to masterpieces over centuries.
