Dong Qichang

Landscape on paper 32x21 P05 by Dong Qichang

Dong Qichang, the Ming dynasty powerhouse who basically wrote the rulebook for Chinese literati painting, serves up a masterclass in composition here. Notice the classic 'one river, two banks' layout? He places a cluster of gnarly, diverse trees in the foreground—hinting at autumn with their sparse foliage—separated by a vast expanse of misty water from the rolling hills in the back. This serene, almost abstract approach was his way of championing the 'Southern School' style, prioritizing scholarly expression and dry brushwork over realistic detail.
