Summer Landscape at Mountain Pass Awaiting Crossing Scroll - Main Painting by Dong Yuan

Dong Yuan captures the lush, humid atmosphere of a summer day in 10th-century China, depicting a tranquil moment of waiting for a ferry across a wide river. As a pioneer of the 'Southern School' of landscape painting, he swapped the sharp, jagged peaks of northern art for soft, rolling hills and dense forests. He used a signature technique called 'hemp-fiber strokes'—wiggly lines resembling twisted rope—to give the mountains a soft, earthy texture. The red seals stamped along the edges are collector marks from emperors and scholars over the last millennium, basically the ancient equivalent of 'likes' on a viral post.
