Gooseberry Jones Pl.5
1947
Dudley Morris captures a moment of pure joy in this 1947 ink illustration, likely a plate from a storybook. The character, Gooseberry Jones, beams with a wide, stylized smile as he cradles a sleeping cat in his arms. The artist uses vigorous, scratchy hatching lines to build up the shadows and create a halo-like background that makes the figure pop off the page. This piece reflects mid-century illustration styles, blending expressive line work with a tender scene of a boy and his pet.
