Gooseberry Jones Pl.6
1947
Dudley Morris captures a lazy summer afternoon in this 1947 illustration, likely Plate 6 from a book featuring the character 'Gooseberry Jones.' An older man with round spectacles and suspenders sits on a wooden porch, grinning broadly as he watches a young boy crouch nearby. The child is enthusiastically devouring a massive slice of watermelon, holding it with both hands in pure delight. The sketchy, energetic lines and cross-hatching give the scene a lively feel, freezing a warm moment of simple, intergenerational joy.
