At the Café-Concert, Two Singers
1878-1880
Degas captures the raw, unpolished energy of Parisian nightlife in this vibrant sketch of two café-concert singers. The woman on the left leans forward, belting out a tune with her mouth wide open, while her companion stands tall in a deep red corset, gazing dreamily upward. Though associated with Impressionism, Degas hated the label and preferred calling himself a realist, obsessed with capturing performers in candid, unposed moments. The rough, chalky strokes on the brown paper give the scene an electric quality, making you feel like you're sitting right there in the smoky, noisy audience.
