Dancer on pointe
ca. 1878
Edgar Degas was absolutely obsessed with the Paris Opera Ballet, and you can feel that fascination in this dynamic sketch of a ballerina caught mid-pirouette. Using dark strokes and bright white highlights, he captures the sheer physical effort of the dance, showing the heavy folds of the tutu and the delicate balance on a single toe. Unlike the polished final performances audiences saw, Degas loved to show the raw, unglamorous reality of the dancers' rigorous training. He created thousands of these studies, treating the ballet not just as a beautiful subject, but as a lifelong scientific study of human motion.
