Dancer Onstage
ca. 1877
Degas was obsessed with capturing the fleeting, unglamorous moments of ballet dancers, and here we see one mid-movement, seemingly caught off-balance against a rough, textured backdrop of greens and browns. The loose, sketchy strokes give the impression of a dancer pausing backstage or during a rehearsal rather than performing a polished routine. He often used unusual cropping, cutting off figures at the edge of the frame to make the scene feel like a candid snapshot. This approach was revolutionary, shifting the focus from idealized beauty to the raw, physical reality of the dancers' lives.
