Dancers on Stage
1879
Degas was obsessed with the Paris Opera Ballet, often sketching them from unusual angles like a bird's-eye view to capture the geometry of the stage. In this lively scene, a central ballerina in a white and blue tutu strikes a pose while her colorful companions wait in the wings. Although he exhibited with the Impressionists, Degas preferred to call himself a 'realist,' focusing on the unglamorous reality of the dancers' lives. The loose, sketchy pastel lines capture the fleeting movement perfectly, making it feel like a candid snapshot from 1879.
