Ballet Scene
Edgar Degas was absolutely obsessed with capturing the unglamorous, behind-the-scenes reality of ballet dancers, and this sketchy study is a perfect example. Instead of polished poses for the audience, we see three ballerinas caught in candid moments of exhaustion and preparation—one adjusting her bodice in the back, while another stretches her arm high in a sweeping gesture. The rough, energetic strokes perfectly convey the fleeting movement and physical strain of the dancers, stripping away the stage magic to show the hard work underneath. Degas often drew from memory or quick sketches in the rehearsal halls, giving his figures this wonderfully raw and immediate feel.
