The Bath by Edgar Degas, 1892-1895

Degas captures a remarkably candid moment of a woman drying off after a bath, leaning heavily over a blue tub with a sponge in hand. Unlike the polished nudes of earlier eras, he presents the female body with raw, unidealized realism, focusing on the weight and natural posture of the figure. Though often grouped with the Impressionists, Degas preferred to call himself a realist, famously stating he wanted to show women 'as if you looked through a keyhole.'
