Three Dancers Preparing for Class
after 1878
Edgar Degas loved capturing the unglamorous, behind-the-scenes moments of ballet life, and this piece is a perfect example. Instead of a polished stage performance, we see dancers in a candid, almost awkward moment of preparation—one bends deeply to adjust her shoe while another sits waiting, their tutus rendered in soft, dusty strokes of blue and white. Degas was obsessed with the human body in motion and often used unusual, cropped angles like a snapshot, making you feel like you're peeking into a private rehearsal room.
