Plums
circa 1880
Imagine a lineup of cool, greenish-white plums, and then one bright orange rebel crashes the party on the far left. Manet painted this around 1880, late in his life, using loose, energetic brushstrokes that make the fruit look almost wet and glowing against the dark, moody background. It’s a perfect example of his shift toward Impressionism, proving you don't need a grand historical scene to make a statement—just a few plums and some great lighting.
