Karl XV
1826-1872
King Charles XV of Sweden stares out with a heavy, bearded intensity in this portrait by Edvard Perséus. Forget the crown and scepter; this is a raw, human look at a monarch who was actually a talented artist and architect himself. The dark, moody background forces you to focus entirely on his expressive eyes and that magnificent beard. It feels less like a formal state portrait and more like a snapshot of a tired king after a long day of ruling.
