Standing Buck
1897
Edward Borein captured the alert grace of a young buck in this 1897 sketch, using quick, energetic pen strokes and cross-hatching to build up the animal's form. Notice how the deer's oversized ears and watchful eyes suggest it has just heard a rustle in the brush, perfectly freezing a fleeting moment of wilderness tension. Borein, who would later become famous for his rugged, romanticized depictions of the American West, shows his keen observational skills right here in this early, minimalist study.
