Freston Tower, Suffolk

Freston Tower, Suffolk by Edward Dayes, 1785

Freston Tower is a real 16th-century folly in Suffolk, England, and Edward Dayes captured its quirky shape perfectly in this 1785 drawing. The tower looks almost like a castle keep, but it was actually built as a viewing platform for a wealthy merchant. Notice the tiny cows grazing peacefully at the base—they give a great sense of scale to this tall structure. Dayes was known for his topographical drawings, and this piece shows his talent for blending architectural detail with a moody, romantic English landscape.
