Edward Theodore Compton was a mountaineer as much as a painter, and this intimate rocky study shows exactly why. Instead of a sweeping panoramic view, he zooms in on the rugged, craggy textures of a cliff face, capturing the warm sunlight hitting the jagged stone. Painted in a realistic style, it feels like a visual note taken during one of his many Alpine expeditions. Compton spent his life climbing peaks and painting them, making his work a perfect blend of athletic adventure and artistic observation.
