On Walchen Lake (Am Walchensee)
1923
Lovis Corinth didn't just document the Bavarian Alps; he attacked the surface with energetic, scratchy lines to capture their rugged soul. Created in 1923 during his beloved summers at the Walchensee, this scene shows the lake flanked by steep mountains and tiny, nestled houses. The loose, almost frantic cross-hatching is a hallmark of his late Expressionist period. Interestingly, Corinth suffered a stroke in 1911 which left his right hand partially paralyzed, forcing him to relearn his craft with a raw, trembling energy that defined these later masterpieces.
