Seated Woman, Back View
1917
Egon Schiele was the king of awkward, raw beauty, and this 1917 sketch proves it. We see a woman from behind, her body hunched in a blue striped blouse, with a hand raised in a twitchy, almost nervous gesture that feels incredibly modern. The jagged lines and bold colors are classic Expressionism, stripping away polite realism to show the raw energy underneath. Tragically, Schiele died just a year later at 28, making these late works some of his most mature and haunting.
