Two Girlfriends by Egon Schiele, 1912

Egon Schiele was the ultimate bad boy of Viennese art, and this 1912 sketch proves exactly why. Titled 'Two Friends,' it captures two nude women tangled together in a pose that feels incredibly intimate yet slightly contorted, drawn with his signature jagged, nervous lines. Schiele was actually arrested that very same year for exhibiting 'immoral' art, so sketching two women in such a raw, unpolished embrace was a dangerously bold move. He completely stripped away the polite, pretty details of classical painting to show something much more human, real, and unapologetic.
