For the Voice Pl.05 by El Lissitzky, 1923

El Lissitzky turned typography into architecture here, building the Russian words for 'Left March' out of bold red columns that look like they could support a building. Created in 1923 for Vladimir Mayakovsky's poetry book 'For the Voice', this page was designed to be flipped through quickly by busy revolutionaries. The sharp black diagonal line slashes across the page, visually shouting the poem's command to the sailors. It’s a classic piece of Constructivist design, where letters aren't just read—they are experienced as loud, physical objects.
