Erna and Gerda in the Studio
1912
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captured the electric energy of his studio in 1912 with this frenetic sketch of two models, Erna and Gerda. As a founding member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, Kirchner ditched realistic proportions for jagged, scribbly lines that practically vibrate off the page. The two figures sit intertwined amidst a chaotic background of sharp angles, looking less like a posed portrait and more like a fleeting, candid snapshot of bohemian life. It’s a perfect example of how these artists wanted to show raw emotion rather than just what the eye sees.
