Seven Cows and Rainbow
1919
Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, a founding member of the German Expressionist group Die Brücke, created this vibrant scene during his recovery in the Swiss Alps around 1919. After suffering a severe nervous breakdown, he traded the frantic energy of Berlin for the serene mountains of Davos, and you can feel that relief in the composition. The rust-red cows and the sweeping rainbow arc are rendered in his signature jagged, energetic style, blending the wildness of nature with a dreamlike, primitive simplicity. It’s a colorful, chaotic snapshot of an artist finally finding peace in the pasture.
