储物箱 by Ethelbert Brown, 1935-1942

Step back in time to 1781 with this beautifully preserved wooden chest, recorded here by artist Ethelbert Brown in the 1930s or 40s. The chest features the inscription 'Jacob Jutzae Anno 1781' and is decorated with classic folk art motifs like stylized tulips and flowers in red and white against a dark blue-green background. Brown's study helps us appreciate the vibrant Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of painting dower chests, which were often given to young brides. It's a wonderful example of how later artists documented the colorful, handmade objects of early American life before they faded into history.
