Approaching Storm
1864
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures the dramatic tension of a beach day about to be ruined by weather. In this 1864 scene, elegantly dressed Victorian vacationers sit near their numbered bathing machines, seemingly ignoring the massive, brooding storm clouds rolling in overhead. Boudin was a master of painting outdoors, and his quick, loose brushstrokes here perfectly convey the shifting light and wind. He actually taught a young Claude Monet to look at the sky, making this moody seascape a crucial stepping stone toward the Impressionist movement.
