Fishing Boats at Scheveningen
1875
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies' by his peers, captures a breezy day at the Dutch fishing village of Scheveningen with his signature loose brushstrokes. Notice how the heavy, overcast clouds dominate the scene, dwarfing the colorful fishing boats resting on the wet sand while a small group of figures huddles nearby. Boudin was a master of painting outdoors long before it became the hallmark of Impressionism, and he actually mentored a young Claude Monet, teaching him to look at the sky and light just like this.
