Berck, Chariot and Fisherwomen on the Beach by Eugène Boudin, circa 1875-1878

Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures a breezy day on the beach at Berck with loose, energetic brushstrokes. A sturdy horse pulls a cart while a group of fisherwomen, bundled in dark shawls, gather on the sand, their forms almost dissolving into the coastal mist. Boudin was a master of painting outdoors long before it became the hallmark of Impressionism, and he actually taught a young Claude Monet to look at the sky and light in this very way. This sketch-like scene feels like a fleeting snapshot of 19th-century French coastal life, frozen in time by a true pioneer of the movement.
