Deauville, Beach Scene by Eugène Boudin, 1890

Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures a breezy afternoon at Deauville beach in 1890. Fashionable Parisians in stiff Victorian attire mingle near the iconic wooden beach huts, looking surprisingly comfortable in the sand. Boudin was a pioneer of painting outdoors (en plein air), and his quick, atmospheric brushstrokes here directly inspired a young Claude Monet to look at light in a whole new way. In fact, Monet once said, 'If I am a painter, I owe it to Boudin,' proving that this sandy beach scene helped launch the entire Impressionist movement.
