Fair Day in Brittany by Eugène Boudin, circa 1865

Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' brings the bustling energy of a Breton market to life in this lively scene. You can almost hear the chatter of the women in their traditional white headdresses and the lowing of the cattle wandering through the dusty square. Boudin was a pioneer of painting outdoors (*en plein air*), and his obsession with capturing the changing light and atmosphere of the sky directly inspired a young Claude Monet to pick up a brush. It’s a perfect snapshot of rural French life just on the cusp of the Impressionist revolution.
