On the Beach at Trouville
1863
Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures a breezy day at the fashionable resort of Trouville in 1863. Notice the strange boxy cart being pulled by a horse right into the surf? That’s a bathing machine, a Victorian contraption that allowed modest bathers to change into their swimwear without being seen by the public. The loose, sketchy brushstrokes here actually inspired a young Claude Monet, who learned from Boudin to paint outdoors and capture the fleeting light of the French coast.
