On the Jetty
c. 1869-1870
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' masterfully captures a breezy day at the beach with loose, energetic brushstrokes that practically let you feel the coastal wind. Crowds of Victorian-era vacationers gather along a wooden jetty and the sandy shore, their dark silhouettes contrasting against the bright, billowing clouds and distant sailboats. Even the little dogs frolicking in the foreground seem caught up in the lively atmosphere of this early Impressionist scene. Boudin's ability to paint en plein air directly influenced his friend Claude Monet, helping to spark the entire Impressionist movement.
