Beach Scene at Trouville by Eugène Boudin, 1868

Before the Impressionists made it cool to paint outdoors, Eugène Boudin was already capturing the fleeting light of the French coast. Known as the 'King of Skies,' he fills two-thirds of this canvas with a dramatic, cloud-filled sky that dwarfs the fashionable Parisians below. These tiny, umbrella-toting figures on the beach at Trouville look like they're straight out of a 19th-century vacation snapshot, complete with sailboats on the horizon. Monet once said he owed his entire career to Boudin's early lessons on observing nature right here on these very beaches.
