Sailboats on the Sea
circa 1888-95
Eugène Boudin, often called the 'King of Skies,' captures the restless energy of the sea in this breezy seascape. Notice how the choppy waves and scudding clouds seem to move right before your eyes, thanks to his quick, loose brushstrokes painted directly outdoors—a technique known as en plein air. As a mentor to a young Claude Monet, Boudin helped pioneer the Impressionist style, proving that capturing a fleeting moment of light and weather was just as important as the subject itself. He famously believed that anything painted on the spot had a vividness that studio work could never match.
