Vincent Benedetti (1817-1900; Count) by Eugène Giraud, 1867

Eugène Giraud captures the French diplomat Vincent Benedetti with a classic caricature twist: a massive, balding head perched atop a comically tiny, stick-figure body in a formal black suit. The bright red sash and medal across his chest signal his high rank, contrasting with his slender, almost fragile legs. Benedetti is historically famous for a massive diplomatic disaster; his meeting with the Prussian King was edited by Otto von Bismarck into the 'Ems Dispatch.' This manipulated telegram essentially tricked France into declaring war in 1870, kicking off the Franco-Prussian War. It’s a funny drawing of a man involved in a very serious historical blunder!
