Morel-Fatio
1810-1871
Eugène Giraud's playful caricature pokes fun at the French marine painter Jean Antoine Théodore Morel-Fatio, depicting him with a comically oversized head and a prominent mustache. Shown rowing a small boat while puffing on a pipe, the subject is dressed in a sailor's uniform complete with an anchor on his collar—a perfect visual pun for a man who dedicated his career to painting the sea. It's a charming, lighthearted sketch that captures the essence of a creator defined by his maritime subjects, turning the painter into the very sailor he likely sketched a thousand times.
