Ecce Homo by Eugène Laermans, 19th century

Eugène Laermans takes the classic biblical scene of 'Ecce Homo' and drags it down into the gritty reality of 19th-century Belgium. Instead of a serene holy moment, we see a chaotic, almost ragtag mob gathered below a balcony, their bodies rendered in loose, frantic strokes that look like a mix of painting and sketching. Laermans was famous for depicting the harsh lives of the poor, and here he transforms the biblical crowd into a group of desperate, everyday people, making the sacred scene feel surprisingly raw and human.
