La course d'avirons
Ferdinand Gueldry was absolutely obsessed with the sport of rowing, and his passion leaps off the canvas in this lively depiction of a river race. Three teams, distinguished by their colorful striped jerseys and caps, battle it out on the shimmering water while a quaint village watches from the riverbank. You can almost hear the rhythmic splash of oars and the shouts of the coxswains as they navigate the current under a vast, puffy sky. It’s a perfect, energetic snapshot of 19th-century French leisure, freezing a moment of intense competition just before the finish line.
