The Man with the Shovel
1897
Fernand Cormon, best known for teaching art rebels like Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec, created this intense anatomical study in 1897. Titled 'The Man with the Shovel,' the piece focuses on the raw physical power of a laborer, with massively muscled arms that look almost sculpted from red clay. The body fades into faint pencil lines, while the heavy boots are sketched separately at the bottom, showing the artist working out the proportions for a larger composition. It’s a perfect example of academic art training, where understanding the human form and the dignity of labor was everything.
