Psyche Going to Bathe by Francesco Bartolozzi, 1786

Francesco Bartolozzi was the rockstar of 18th-century London engravers, famous for making high art affordable and fashionable. This print, published in 1786, depicts the mythological Psyche preparing for a bath, attended by nymphs in a scene of classical modesty and grace. The incredibly soft, fuzzy look is Bartolozzi’s signature 'stipple' technique, using thousands of tiny dots to mimic the texture of chalk drawings. It’s a perfect example of Neoclassicism, where ancient Greek myths were repackaged as elegant, decorative prints for wealthy Georgian homes.
