circa 1928-1929
Francis Picabia was the ultimate art world shape-shifter, constantly ditching one style for another just to keep critics on their toes. This sketch, part of his mysterious 'Transparences' series from the late 1920s, looks like a visual daydream caught on paper. A classical female profile acts as a ghostly container for a jumble of memories: a grand dome reminiscent of St. Peter's Basilica, a draped religious figure, and a winged statue on a column all overlap in a dreamlike double-exposure. It feels like flipping through a stack of travel postcards where the images bleed into one another, capturing how our minds layer past experiences over the present.
